How to clone a a VirtualBox Disk (.VDI)

 

Copying the image of Virtual Disk (.vdi file) is a convenient way to duplicate the disk, in cases you want to avoid re-installing an operating system from scratch.
However, simply copying the .vdi file into another location will make a verbatim copy of the virtual disk, including the UUID of the disk. If you try to add the copy in the Virtual Media Manager, you will get an error like this:

In this case, you have to do is to clone the vdi disk:

$ VBoxManage clonevdi     Original.vdi   Clone.vdi

Example:
cd C:\Program Files\Sun\VirtualBox\

C:\Program Files\Sun\VirtualBox>vboxmanage clonevdi  G:\11GR2_OEL5_32GB.vdi  G:\OEL5_32GB.vdi

Note: In case you receive a error like this. It means that the disk is already a copy of other VirtualBox Disk. In that case you could change the UUID before to clone the Disk.

For .Net Track
1) A windows machine with 2 GB memory
2) Attendees must in advance of the show, download and install VMWare player:       http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
3) Attendees should test their machine to make sure they can run an executable on an external USB hard drive (some corporate machines are locked down so they cannot do this)

For Java Track
You will save time if you install these applications in advance:
1) A windows machine with 2 GB memory
2) VirtualBox must be installed in each laptop

Que es VirtualBox ?

VIRTUALBOX (Open Source para virtualización)

Las herrramientas de virtualización se han puesto de moda de manera casi exponencial durante los últimos años. Una de ellas es VirtualBox, esta corre sobre diferentes sistemas operativos y para los desarrolladores e ingenieros en computo que desean realizar pruebas de productos sin afectar sus maquinas, esta es una de las mejores alternativas. Adicionalmente hay algo que tiene VirtualBox que aun es mejor, es un program Open Source, eso significa que la podras usar en tu maquina teniendo un costo de $0.

Esta herramienta realiza basicamente la misma funcion que Vmware Workstation, e incluso puede ejecutar la maquinas virtuales creadas con vmware workstation sin necesidad de realizar conversiones de alguna manera.

La ultima version disponible al dia de hoy es la 3.1.6 y este puede ser descargado facilmente.  Solo visita uno de estos sites.
